Protecting and improving natural resources is a critical initiative of the nation’s food and agriculture sectors. Good stewardship is paramount. Farm Foundation works to build understanding of the conservation priorities of farmers, ranchers and landowners, as well as the economic impacts of implementing conservation tools for individual operations.

We encourage public-private partnerships that achieve sustainable stewardship objectives. We build bridges with regulators, producers and consumers to create workable options to address issues.

Digital Agriculture

The emergence and merging of innovations from seemingly disparate sectors are generating a new technological revolution in food and agriculture. Comprehensive data, extended internet connectivity, unmanned aerial vehicles, DNA scans, gene editing and precision agriculture promise to have far-reaching consequences across the agricultural value chain. Private and public sectors have key roles in the development and use of technology that can assist and guide evidence-based decisions across the value chain.

Making Informed Decisions About Technology in Agriculture

Rapidly evolving technologies are taxing the ability of regulatory systems to keep pace. As new frontiers open, the need, scope and type of regulatory inquiries will need careful consideration. Farm Foundation works to help public and private decision makers better understand the implications of new technologies, as well as public policy issues that may evolve.

Farm Foundation looks around the corner at how new technologies will reshape the future of the industry, including social, economic and consumer impacts. We examine how new technologies impact traditional farm structures, the organizations that support those operations and the business models they use.

Farmer Health

Farm Foundation is interested in pursuing projects that create practical solutions for all aspects of farmer health, including not just mental health, but also physical and financial health. Today, many farmers may not seek care because they are worried about being perceived negatively in their communities. At the same time, access to care can be a real challenge for farm families. Finding a provider for mental health and wellness services, for example, can be a challenge in rural areas—there may not be one nearby, and if there is, there is often a waiting list. In addition, many families may simply not be able to afford care.

The flagship project at Farm Foundation addressing farmer health is the Farm Family Wellness Alliance, which focuses on mental health and other wellness services. Other projects tied to farmer health are linked below, focused on areas such as socio-economic needs and early career resources.

Farm Foundation has a long history of advising policymakers about issues of critical importance to the success of farmers and ranchers. Foremost among these issues are agricultural trade and policies that affect the ability of farmers and ranchers to enter—and thrive in—the profession.

We established the Food and Agricultural Trade Resource Center to bring clarity to trade discussions and enable productive debate and dialogue on trade policy issues.

A broad range of information and insights are available there to help improve knowledge and understanding of key agricultural trade issues and principles.

We also produce content, conferences and events designed to allow stakeholders from across the food and agricultural value chain to engage in knowledge sharing, discussion and collaboration to build momentum behind practical solutions to market challenges and opportunities.
